Are Manchester United Favourites to win the FA cup?

Manchester United edged past Premier League rivals Liverpool in their fourth round FA Cup ties last weekend, with a 3-2 victory at Old Trafford. In an end-to-end battle, United eventually progressed to the fifth round thanks to a late Bruno Fernandes free-kick that sealed the tie for the Red Devils.

Ole Gunnar Solskjær’s rode their luck at times in the win over Liverpool, bouncing back from a goal down to eventually win the match. Liverpool applied plenty of pressure with the score at 2-2, Roberto Firmino in particular was proving a big threat to United’s defence. However, United’s top-scorer, Fernandes came off the bench for the final 15 minutes and drove a stunning free-kick past Allison to win it United.

It was a frantic cup-tie that was eventually decided by a moment of world-class quality. However, with some big ties coming up in the FA Cup fifth round, United will have to be at their best to win this year’s competition.

Key Players

If United are to progress, they will need to rely on their star players. Fernandes has been United’s best player this season and he proved his importance with the winner against Liverpool. The Portuguese is the club’s top goal scorer this season, with 11, and he also has the most assists - eight.

Both Marcus Rashford and Mason Greenwood impressed in the 3-2 win over Liverpool too. The two forwards provided pace and precision on the counterattack and played a key role in United’s comeback from 1-0 down as they both scored a goal and provided an assist either side of half-time.

Two players who have also been integral to United’s recent form are Paul Pogba and Luke Shaw. Pogba was a defensive stalwart against Liverpool and prevented the likes of James Milner and Gini Wijnaldum from controlling the game, while Luke Shaw was relentless in supporting both defence and attack from the left back position. Ole is going to have to cross his fingers and hope all of his favoured starting eleven make it through to the later stages of the tournament, injury free, so if you feel like lady luck is on your side too check out

Favourites to win the tournament

As the FA Cup heads into the last 16, Man United, Manchester City, Chelsea, Leicester and Tottenham are still in the competition. Only four teams outside of the Premier League remain in the FA Cup, all of whom will face Premier League opposition.

If some of the top Premier League sides progress past the fifth round, and don’t meet each other in the quarter finals, it’s likely that 2019/20 semi-finalists Chelsea, City and United, could reach the same stage in this year’s competition.

However, with the likes of Everton and Leicester in excellent form in the Premier League this season, these two sides could also have an outside chance of lifting the FA Cup. Spurs have also shown good form in the domestic cup competitions and have already reached the final of the EFL Cup this season.

United face a tough fifth round tie at home to West Ham, who have won all six of their games in 2021 so far. If the Red Devils progress past David Moyes’ side in the next round, they could be in with a good chance of going all the way.

However, Man City and Chelsea could stand in their way. Both sides take on lower league opposition in Swansea and Barnsley in their fifth-round ties. Spurs and Everton face each other, which will lead to the elimination of one of the competition’s other big Premier League teams, while Leicester will also fancy their chances against Brighton.
