What’s next for online betting in the US?

Betting has become huge here. Don’t misunderstand: Americans clearly enjoy a gamble anyway, having better an estimated $150 billion on sports illegally each year.

It’s just that since the Supreme Court legalized sports betting, betting has exploded in the country. Americans have bet more than $20 billion with US sportsbooks since the ruling.

At the start of 2020, the American Gaming Association estimated that around 26 million people would bet on the Super Bowl game between the San Francisco 49ers and the Kansas City Chiefs, with five million doing this online.

It’s fair to say, then, that the US has grown a healthy appetite for gambling. This post looks at some of the changes in online betting technology and in legislation around betting.

Legalization of sports betting

The US Supreme Court’s decision in May 2018 was a landmark one. New Jersey had argued that Congress had breached its authority when it passed the original laws on gambling on sports, and the Supreme Court agreed.

Previously, major sports leagues such as the NHL, NBA and Major League Baseball had urged lawmakers to uphold the original laws. Their concern was that sports betting would the integrity of the game, but since then some leagues have become more receptive to sports betting and the opportunities it offers them.

Twenty states have already welcomed sports betting, legalizing betting in person or on mobile only, or both. Only three states haven’t moved towards legalization or look unlikely to, and the rest are in various stages of moving towards sport betting as a legal activity.

But what changes have been taking in the world of online gambling technology itself?

In-play betting

Perhaps one of the most exciting developments has been the creation of in-play betting. This type of betting, also known as “live betting”, allows players to place a bet after an event has started and before it ends.

Live betting favors a player because the odds can change during an event. For instance, if a team scores a touchdown, the odds of either team will change to something different to what they were before the start of the event.

This real-time betting adds excitement to the experience. If you fancy giving it a try and need a few tips first, you can read OLBG’s guide to live betting and find out how to stack the odds in your favor.

The development of mobile technology for gambling

The development of mobile technology has been huge for online gaming of any sort.

Both casinos and sports betting operators have worked hard on the mobile side of things to make their services as accessible as possible to players. Players can download apps onto their cell phone or tablet and play on the go.

The days of being tied to a desktop computer are long gone. The options of playing casino games and betting on one’s computer are still there for anyone who wants them, however.

It’s not just about the possibility, though. Developers are forever working on the experience of using an app or website itself.

Good functionality, design and the provision of an enjoyable experience overall have become crucial for operators so that they can retain customers. They know that lots of operators will be happy to step into their shoes if they can’t oblige their customers with the playing experience they want.

The incorporation of virtual reality

Virtual reality is already making its presence felt in sports betting, especially in the realm of fantasy sports. Players can put on headsets, tune into virtual reality sports events, and, of course, wager a little money on them.

Another area of the online gambling arena which is making use of this technology is the world of online casinos. These casinos are constantly seeking ways to improve the experience for their players and replicate that of playing at a land-based casino.

Live dealers

In part of their quest to deliver the best experience, many online casinos provide a live dealer. Casinos spend a lot of money on their online technology and can stream real-time games into the homes of the player(s).

This helps them replicate the experience of playing in a land-based casino more fully. The player(s) can bet as they go, but also enjoy a little privacy and comfort while they play.

The application of social media

Social media and digital have become major new ways to market products, providing gambling operators with new channels to engage their customers.

The fact that so many people are online using social media, and the development of mobile technology, is making it possible for operators to reach more people, whether that’s by engaging existing customers or attracting new customers with offers and deals.

Not only that, however, they can do so in a less obtrusive way.

There was a time when the US was much less tolerant of gambling, and although it seems that the country still has a little way to go in terms of online gambling tolerance, there are signs that lawmakers are warming to the online gambling industry.

Sports betting online is a step in this direction. Meanwhile, operators in the online gambling sphere are working continuously hard on their products and services to create the best experience for their customers. Who knows how far the industry will go as both laws and operators progress?
